The Seal That Doesn't Outlive Its Shipment

Mega Fortris has built a biodegradable bio-additive into every plastic security seal we make – without giving up a single millimetre of tamper-evidence.

Every security seal we have ever made is still out there somewhere. That’s the job – a seal has to survive tampering, weather, transit, an years in a supply chain most people never see. But durability has a cost after the job is done. Once a seal is cut and discarded, the same plastic that made it tamper-proof makes it near-permanent as waste.

For an industry built on single-use plastic components, that’s becoming harder to justify – to auditors, to customers, and to the sustainability targets showing up on more procurement scorecards every year. We didn’t think the answer was a weaker seal. So we built a smarter one.

A bio-additive, not a compromise

Since May 2024, every Mega Fortris security seal with plastic content (our full range of polypropylene and nylon seals) has included the BioSphere bio-additive as standard.

It isn’t a coating, and it isn’t recycled content pretending to solve the whole problem, though our seals include that too: 30% recycled content across our polypropylene range. BioSphere is mixed directly into the base polymer. Once a seal reaches landfill or a similar anaerobic environment, the additive activates naturally occurring microbes, which break down the plastic’s polymer bonds from the inside out.

What’s left afterwards isn’t microplastic. It’s low-weight, non-toxic compound and water – byproducts that are compatible with recycling processes rather than working against them.

Certified, not just claimed

‘Biodegradable’ gets used loosely in this industry, so we didn’t stop at bio-additive. Seals made with BioSphere technology are certified to ISO 14021:2016, the international standard defining what ‘biodegradable’ is allowed to mean on a product label – and they’re independently tested against four further methods.

Still the seal you already trust

None of this changes what a Mega Fortris seal is built to do BioSphere enabled seals carry the same tamper-evidence, the same ISO 17712 compliance, and the same physical performance as every seal we’ve shipped before. The bio-additive changes what happens after the seal’s job is done – not how well it does that job.

What stays the same

  • Tamper-evidence and security performance
  • ISO 17712 compliance
  • Application method and fit
  • Lead times and product range

What changes

  • What happens to the seal after disposal
  • Its footprint in landfill or anaerobic conditions
  • Your answer to sustainability audits

For procurement and security teams, that means no re-qualification headache and no trade-off to defend internally. It’s a drop-in upgrade to a product line you already specify.

One less line item to justify

Security seals rarely show up in sustainability conversations – they’re small, functional, and easy to overlook next to packaging or freight emissions. But as ESG reporting extends further into Scope 3 and supplier scorecards, every plastic component in a supply chain eventually gets a question mark next to it.

BioSphere gives supply chain, procurement, and sustainability teams a straightforward answer for one of those line items – backed by test data, not a green logo. It won’t solve a company’s entire footprint. But it removes one component that used to have no good answer at all.

Does BioSphere change how the seal performs?

No. Tamper-evidence, strength, and ISO 17712 compliance are identical to our standard seals. The additive only affects what happens after disposal.

Which products include it?

Every Mega Fortris security seal with plastic content - our full polypropylene and nylon ranges - has included BioSphere as standard since May 2024.

What actually happens to the plastic?

In anaerobic environments like landfill, the additive activates microbes that break down the polymer into non-toxic, low-weight compounds and water.

Is this independently verified?

Yes. Seals are certified to ISO 14021:2016 and tested to ASTM D5511, ASTM D5526, ATSM D5338, and ISO DIS 15986.

Does this cost more than the standard seal?

Pricing depends on the type of seal and order volume. Request a quote and our team will walk you through exact costs for your specification.
